About Haru

Meet the Founder & Artist

I was born in Tokyo and worked in the fashion design industry for many years. Since leaving Japan I have become fascinated with traditional Kimono fabrics. I love how the silk is all made by hand using traditional methods. The complex patterns and texture reflect the nature and culture of Japan in its vibrant color and delicate craftsmanship. I wanted to use this unique and rare fabric to create a contemporary look from the beauty of the past.

The inspiration to start making scarves from vintage silk came after noticing many Japanese households, including my own, have closets full of Kimonos that are rarely, if ever worn. I found it heartbreaking that these beautiful garments all hidden away and rarely seen so I decided to repurpose the fabric into modern wearable accessories. The aim of my work is to re-imagine these vintage garments into modern clothing thereby giving a new life to the beautiful and vibrant fabric.

I have been making scarfs and accessories since 2008. Each item is one of a kind and is handmade or painted by me using vintage kimono fabric sourced from directly from rural Japan.

Annual Kimono Trip to Japan

Every year in March, I return to Japan to collect more vintage kimono fabrics to make the Haru NY accessories. During this time, my online store will remain open & shoppable, however no deliveries can be made until I return to the states. I will announce on my home page one month prior to my trip every year that there will be a delivery delay during March. If you plan to purchase and have a Haru NY product for March, please order in advance so you will not have to wait until April to receive the product.

Thank you for your support & understanding!
